The weather was gorgeous this Saturday our AGM attendees had the opportunity to explore the beautiful Treborth Gardens where the event was being held.
The day started with the election of the committee and I am pleased to say that we have filled the below roles however we do still have committee roles to fill which can be found here Volunteer
Chair – Harriet King
Co – Ordinator – Tomos Barlow
Treasurer – James Woodcock
The first guest speakers were Croeso Menai who gave a wonderful talk in 3 parts, about how they started, and who they support and Kherta gave a presentation on life under the Taliban regime for young girls and women. This looked into the effects of a lack of education and rights have, rights these women once had.
It was a very stark and humbling experience and Harriet the chair commented on how she takes for granted her ability to speak about injustices without fear or persecution.
Croeso Menai is now looking for their third family to support in the local area after being contacted by a local landlord who had an available house. Houses are always from private landlords and not council houses.
Following Croeso Menai Jenny Jones gave a talk & Q&A based on her experiences as a Baroness in the House of Lords, where she explained the processes of bills, select committees and a lot of scrutiny. We were surprised to find out that there is no upper limit to the number of Lords that can be given at one time. Jenny along with Baroness Bennett have both called for reform of the Lords to limit sitting members to a management number of around 350 compared to the existing 832 sitting members in the House of Lords.
Thanks to everyone who attended
